Our Summer Kitchen

IMG_1136These are the days of summer. Days of endless sunshine, summer outings, and cozy afternoon naps. It’s around this time every year that I find myself forgetting that it ever gets cold here. I find that I’m unable to bring to mind that “shivery” feeling that comes in late November and stays until well into April. Winter seems eons away — almost like a piece of cruel fiction, far too cruel to be more than a story.

In actuality, though, few things seem more like fiction than our kitchen in the summertime. Fiction or farce? It’s hard to know, sometimes! Sometimes the menu is so far-fetched that it surely must be fiction. Then again, there are times when it’s so cluttered — an impossible mess — that it must certainly be farce.

We have what can only be described as a small kitchenIMG_0961. Square foot for square foot, it’s definitely not the smallest kitchen in the world, but the set-up is such that counterspace is very limited — storage space is only slightly more abundant.

So, in these endless days of sunshine, while others might be enjoying a nap as the afternoon sun peeks in through the curtains, we are trying to figure out how to function with every possible surface covered with something from either the garden or our numerous picking excursions! I don’t say this to complain in any way — nearly the opposite, in fact.

There are surely mornings when I’d enjoy making coffee without having to move 24 tomatoes three-at-a-time in order to get to the coffeemaker. And there are afternoons when I get home from the office and I’d rather zonk out in front of the boob tube rather than make jam or pickles, but the time for well-earned rest and reward is surely on its way!

Just as I begin to feel summer will never end and winter is something that happens someplace else, I look in the pantry and see shelves full of summer shoved lovingly into jars and I immediately long for autumn. And — even though it’s still August and the weather forecast is still filled with words like “muggy” and “hot” — there are mornings when a crisp breeze from the lake reminds me that we’re almost there!

It’s also at times like these when I step back from our tiny sink and look around me. Though it’s small and can’t hold more than two people at a time, I realize that I love this tiny little space — so many memories have been created here. Though there’s no fancy island, no custom cabinetry, and frighteningly little ventilation at times; this kitchen is our own version of perfect — the scenery changing along with the four seasons. A counter full of tomatoes and cucumbers, today. A counter full of apples, soon. I can’t wait to see what comes next…

  1. I know I’ve surely loved all the wonderful meals that have come out of that kitchen. Some of my favorite memories were of standing in the doorway talking to you about some show, colleague or girlfriend while you prepped, cooked and doled out advice.

  2. What are the cucumbers in jars? Did I just answer my own question?

    The tomatoes look so beautiful, like a happy bunch of bouncing balls.

    I love your entries, but almost as much I love your photos! They’re always so crisp and well-lot. What kind of camera do you use?

      The cucumbers in this particular picture are a giant batch of Refrigerator Dill Pickles.

      Our camera is a Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS. It’s super easy to use (obviously). 🙂

  3. It is neat to see such a ‘Green” kitchen. Canning does allow winter to have great tastes of “warmth” So…CAN-ON!!
